I had very little trouble installing the Spotlight Cam Solar Wireless Outdoor Rectangle Security Camera. I choose to install it over my mailbox and anchor it to the red brick wall. This being the hardest task for me. The kits each came with a cement drill bit and anchors as well as screws and even the screwdriver. The Spotlight Cam comes with one battery pack only. And my kit actually came with the Solar Panel Spotlight Cam Battery. The unit actually holds two Quick Release Battery packs. Upon installation due to the arrangement of my home having multiple levels and the Wi-Fi system being some distance I found myself also needing the Ring Chime Pro which actually boosts and relays connection to the Spotlight and from the router. So, if you find this to be the case for an additional $49.00 plus tax this will pretty much get you up and running in most cases. I also own the Ring Video Doorbell 2 which had similar issues and I actually now have uninstalled it and use the battery from that unit as the 2nd battery for the new Spotlight Solar Wireless Outdoor Camera. This one is much better for my needs. They are completely the same and quite compatible. However, if you wish to purchase a new one at Home Depot they will cost you only $29.00 plus tax for one Quick Release Battery Pack. All in all, this system I like so far and have it up and running. Also, be aware this unit has a trial period of 30 days where you are receiving all the features after that time the basic charge is $3.00 per camera or $30.00 per year to keep all of the functions the same as the 30 day trial.

I’ve tested a wide range of security cameras, including three separate Ring products, and this is by far my favorite of them all. Ring finally got it right, beating out its competitors in just about every way!
Here’s what’s so great about the Ring Spotlight Cam Solar:
    (1) Ring is one of the few companies that actually gets it when it comes to DIY outdoor cameras. Long power cords are awful, and battery power alone isn’t enough. You need solar, and this is Ring’s second product to offer it (the StickUpCam was the first). The Spotlight Cam looks better than the StickUpCam, and adds dual battery slots plus a spotlight, of course. And yes, the solar panel keeps the camera charged (although you’ll want to give it a full charge via USB when you first set it up).
    (2) It works with Wink and Echo Show! The product is so new that it shows up as a “Ring StickUpCam” in Wink (which I also have), but otherwise it works just fine. It will serve as a motion sensor (turning on house lights via Wink), which is how I use it. And yes, you can view the live stream from Echo Show.
There are two issues I have with the product as it stands today:
    (1) I wish Ring would add the ability to disable the spotlight (so it doesn’t shine in the eyes of guests when they approach your house when you are home, for example), and the ability to remotely activate it (so you can get a better view through the live cam, for example). I’m sure these would be easy to add to the app later on – in fact, the promotional photo of the app provided by Ring to The Home Depot shows a light switch, but it doesn’t actually exist in the app.
    (2) the solar panel really needs an updated mount. This is in fact the same panel Ring released for the StickUpCam in 2017, but now with a new plug. Well, Ring should have updated the mount too. It only pivots in one direction, which just doesn’t make sense for a solar panel. You want it pointed at the sun, but the only way to point it up is to mount it vertically, and that may not work for your installation area. If you mount it horizontally, you can only swivel it left to right. Ring should simply add the pivot ball mount it uses for the camera to the solar panel. That would be an obvious solution.
Now one word of caution: this model does not actually appear to have a built-in siren, which is something that’s still listed in the specifications list. The earlier version of the wired Spotlight Cam that I tested did have it, so I know how it’s supposed to be activated, and this one just doesn’t even show the siren in the app. Furthermore, there’s nowhere it could be hiding in this device – once you open it up, you see nearly the entire thing is hollow, due to the dual battery slots in this model (one battery is included). There’s no space for a siren in there, I’m sure of it! In the end, that doesn’t bother me at all, because the siren always seemed like a big gimmick. It was not automatic (how could it be with an outdoor camera, honestly)… it was something you’d activate from the app if you happened to spot an intruder in the act. 1 in a million chance, so good riddance, I say. The addition of battery-powered operation is by far more useful.

The image quality of this security camera is one of the best I’ve seen. The day photos are full of color while the low light night vision is crystal clear black and white. The alarm from this is very loud.
This does come with 2 LED spotlight bars that really light up the area…..as much as the LED 2 spotlight motion detector I have mounted near it.
It’s easy to hang, easy to adjust and comes with 1 battery pack (it has room for 2). Make sure to charge the battery BEFORE hooking to the solar panel and using. The solar panel is just to maintain the battery, not charge it.
The tricky part is getting the program downloaded from Google or Microsoft Play Store. It does take up a bit of space on your hard driver (tablet, computer and cell phone compatible) but is fully adjustable to suit your needs. Make sure your router puts or a good signal for the unit to pick up or you’ll have delayed signal, video and photos. Some phones won’t work with this properly unless connected via WI-FI.
The sensor can be adjusted for field of view/motion using the live view in the app or program. We were picking up cars driving and getting alerts before making these minor adjustments!
It’s not a terribly difficult install and set up IF YOU READ THE DIRECTIONS! Ring has a good customer service base so they can readily help as needed.

This cam works half the time. The WiFi signal says ok, even with a chime pro plugged in 11ft away inside the house. When it works the video is very clear. It is very sensitive as it seems to come on when the wind blows.

  5. Dale

It took several days but I finally got it adjusted correctly. The problem was to adjust it so that street traffic wouldn’t set off the motion sensor which triggers the camera to start recording. After re-reading about the doorbell model I discovered that it recharges the battery using the existing doorbell wiring. The other benefit of doorbell model is it gets the persons face better than the cam model. The cam model is more like looking down at the person and doesn’t get their face as well. The solar panel works great but may get damaged in a hail storm. I might replace it with the doorbell model and put the cam in the backyard.

Going to have to contact Home Depot tomorrow, but I’ve only received the solar panel and not the camera… Just awesome, wanted this to arrive before my dad came for a visit (from Wisconsin to Las Vegas) so he could install it for me as I wanted it high up on the side of my house. Well thanks…. guess I’ll have to just try and not kill myself while I try to install it when I actually get the correct product.
Pro- It’s black like I ordered
Con-Missing the camera, no idea if the panel actually works since that’s all I received.
If… (hopefully when) I get my product that I ordered, I will update my review. Hopefully no hassle trying to get it fixed, fingers crossed!

The cameras work great and easy to install. They perform very well and I purchased the chime pro and incorporated it into the system for exceptional performance. I wish they were a little cheaper so I could buy more.

I have a Ring security system already installed so I am familiar with their devices. The Ring Spotlight Cam with the Solar Panel is perfect for my backyard! I can install it anywhere since I don’t need an electrical outlet. The order arrived within a few days as promised. I installed the Cam and Panel in less than 30 minutes and the setup was easy with the step by step instructions. I’ve had it for a few weeks now and it is working great. The alerts are functioning as I set them up. I would recommend this product.
