Has about a 45 degree rang that it responds to. I put it right next to the door and you can come in, walk down the hallway, and go up the stairs without it even registering movement. Useless.

I could walk 5 steps with it the field of view before the system picks up my motion. Sure the thieves may need more than 5 steps but the sensitivity is just not there. My old ADT system would no even let me move 1 finger on my hand without Triggering a motion.

The product is easy to sync and install, although given the fact that the adhesive strips are built in to the back of the plastic, if you want to change the location you’d have a hard time getting it to stick. Not to mention ripping holes in your walls. Haven’t tried it but there are no tabs to pull or any release mechanism like command strips have. Does a good job detecting motion – the range and sensitivity seem like they capture everything in our large family/kitchen/dining room area.

My main beef with this product though is there is no way to set exclusion zones or pick a setting that will ignore a large dog. I set it on the lowest sensitivity and it still caught our 75lb golden every time. If there was setting that ignored motion signatures up to 100lb, or if I could set it to ignore the area 2-3’ above the floor then the sensor would be a lot more flexible. What are the chances that someone less than 100lb will break in and crawl through your living room?

Next step may be to mount it higher, but I’m afraid of moving it and there are no other recommendations I can find other than 7.5’ for pets. Honestly i will probably just set it to stay off all the time, and then turn it on if we leave the house for an extended time and our dog isn’t there. But that is kind of cumbersome as you need to adjust that in the detailed settings of the device every time.

Overall I’m kind of annoyed with this sensor, but it came as part of a bulk package and I’m pretty happy with ring as a whole so far so I don’t plan on returning it.

In a big room the first generation motion sensor does a better job. Further range across the board. And yes, I have the setting set for max distance. Other than that seems to work well.

I have recently purchased a Ring Home Security system to replace my ancient ADT system. I am kicking myself for not doing this sooner, although the 2nd Generation Ring system has only just come out. The whole system is very easy to install, and the components are significantly cheaper than ADT. Additionally, the monthly monitoring fee is $10/month if you purchase a year in advance, or $13 if you go month to month, and this includes online storage of all video shot for the past 90 days. I dropped ADT because they raised my monitoring rate from $51 to nearly $55 per month, and I had no video cameras in the system. The savings in monitoring will pay for my entire Ring system including monitoring in a year. I purchased an additional motion detector as an add-on to the basic system. All I had to do was open the Ring app, open the menu, select devices, and then “add device.” The app then walked me through it. I selected 2nd Gen motion sensor, then pulled the plastic tab out of the battery compartment, and the sensor found the network, and all I had to do was name it, stick it to the wall, and run a test to make sure it was sensing motion. It arrives out of the box with its sensitivity set to maximum. I set it to minimum to see if my dogs could pass through its field of view without being detected. My smaller dog, at 50 pounds could get through about half of the time; however, my larger dog at 90 pounds is detected every time he passes through. So, I’m leaving the sensors at maximum sensitivity and will only set my alarm for “away” when we are out of the house with the dogs. If we leave the dogs at home, we have to set the alarm for “stay,” which activates all of the sensors except the motion detectors. Not a big sacrifice, as anyone would have to be an idiot to break into our house with the two dogs barking at them from within. So far, I am very happy with the RIng system, and their customer support.

I just installed my Ring system today, and overall I am pleased. However, I am concerned about how the products (particularly the motion detectors) stick to the wall. The contact sensors (for doors and windows) and the motion detectors both use an adhesive backing. Make sure you stick it in the correct place the first time!

I cleaned the surfaces (plain white wall) where I planned to attach the devices first. I installed the door sensors without issue. The first motion detector was a painless corner install. The second motion detector install was quite literally painful. I installed it in a corner, and it very quickly detached from the wall and hit the hard floor. The cover popped off and the batteries came out, but it doesn’t seem too damaged on the outside. I’m kind of concerned about the inside, however. The adhesive side landed sticky side up, so thinking maybe it was a fluke, I tried to attach it to the wall again. It seemed to work, but I decided I would move it over on the wall about a foot, so I could attach it using the two fresh/unused flat surface adhesive attachments. (There are four total on the back of the motion detector, only two are used at a time depending on where you choose to install.)

As I was standing on a stool wiping down the wall, the motion detector detached again and slammed into the edge of my knee cap. I held it up into the corner again and looked at the adhesive patches, and it seems one of them wouldn’t align totally flush with the corner. A few hours later, I still have a big red mark that feels like it’s going to develop into a nice bruise.

I really hope the motion detector’s internal mechanisms weren’t affected by the two falls, and I hope the other devices stay put! I want to get some more sensors, but might wait until I see how these hold up. Not sure how else to reattach them if they fall off, except buy new ones or use your own adhesive.

These definitely detect motion. They are easy to install, my husband just pressed it to the wall and they haven’t moved at all since installation and it has been a couple months.

If this is the 2nd generation, I shudder to think how it could get off the drawing board much less into production. Then again, ring seems to have quality control issues in its app development too. If you’re an owner of the 1st Gen Ring Alarm system I would stay away from this (unless every room and passageway in your home are small rooms adjoined together).

The only upside this model has over the previous is when changing the motion sensitivity settings – it happens immediately unlike the 1st Gen (of which you had to wait (hours) or open the motion sensor cover immediately for it to happen).
